About Us
SLM is the result of two prominent Colac legal firms which merged in 2001 to become the leading legal service provider in Colac and surrounding districts.
The firm of Sewells Lawyers began in 1899 as a branch office of a Geelong firm and became Sewell and Sewell in 1920. The firm of Larkins McCarthy began in 1910. Today the merged firm has offices in Colac, Camperdown, Cobden and Apollo Bay. In July 2009, Sewells Larkins McCarthy abbreviated its name to SLM Law and unveiled a new company logo.
The Directors are Stuart Holbery, David Casey, Jeff Thornton and Meagan Compton.

- 1. We put our clients first
The Directors and Staff are focused on our clients outcomes and are all committed to giving their best efforts to the interests of the firm's clients pursuant to the law.
- 2. We act with honesty and integrity
Our clients can trust the Directors and Staff and our dealings are always based on complete good faith. We have a proven track record and value client relationships.
- 3. We deal fairly
Whether it is a court appearance, a commercial transaction or a transfer of Real Estate, we treat our clients with respect and endeavour to act fairly and honestly. We charge what we believe is appropriate for our service and expect that our clients will rely on us. We will not take on unreasonable clients or pursue a line of argument that is untenable. We will give honest advice as to our assessment of outcomes.
- 4. We treat clients with courtesy
This applies to all our dealings. At SLM Law we understand the rights of the individual and we do not indulge in any discrimination. We avoid conflicts between our clients. Our aim is to communicate and keep the client informed.
- 5. We aim to be good citizens
Our place in the community means that we must strive for the highest standards of conduct in both our personal and business activities. The Directors and Staff assist the community and take a long term approach rather than just focus on financial gain.
- 6. We aim to be professional
In transactions we look at the bigger picture and how other issues impact. We try to do a job that is more than just processing, we try to be progressive.
- 7. We value feedback
If you have a suggestion that can benefit our business or our clients, we want to know about it.
